Privacy Statement

The Northern Territory Department of Education and Training (DET) is committed to protecting all personal information which we hold. This is in accordance with the Information Privacy Principles (IPPs) as prescribed in the Northern Territory Information Act 2002.

The IPPs regulate the way that government agencies can collect, use and manage your personal information. The IPPs also give you the right to request what information we hold about you and we are further required to make all reasonable steps to correct your personal information if it is incorrect.

Use and disclosure of personal information collected by DET

We only collect, store and use personal information that is necessary for us to perform our functions and to provide our services. In providing these services, we assume that you consent to our use of your personal information to provide you with the services you have requested and to allow us to communicate with you effectively. This assumption includes use of your personal information by third parties which we engage or contract to provide the services on our behalf.

In other circumstances, we will endeavour to obtain your consent before your information is disclosed to third parties. Where your consent has not been obtained or in certain circumstances, information may still be disclosed to third parties if we believe that:

  • we can prevent a serious and imminent threat to your or another individual's life, health or safety;
  • we can prevent a serious threat to public health or public safety; or
  • it is necessary to assist in the prevention, detection, investigation, prosecution or punishment of an offence or breach of a prescribed law.

Security of personal information

We take all reasonable measures to prevent unauthorised access to, modification or disclosure of your personal information. We will also take all reasonable measures to protect your personal information from misuse or loss.

When you visit our website or send us an email

When you visit our website, our internet service provider will make a record of your visit and may log the following information:

  • the address of the computer you are using;
  • the top level domain name of the network you are on;
  • the date and time of your visit;
  • the pages you accessed and the documents you downloaded;
  • the previous site you visited;
  • the search term you used to find our site (if any);
  • the type of browser you are using.

The above information is collected for statistical purposes only and we will not use it to identify users or their browsing activities.

We will record your email address only if you send us a message. We assume that we are able to use your email address for the purposes outlined in the "Use and disclosure of personal information collected by DET" section of this statement outlined above.

You can access personal information about you

You are able to request access to personal information that we hold about you. You are also able to seek to correct information which we hold about you. We will provide you with access to this information providing that the disclosure would not:

  • cause a serious and imminent threat to your or another individual's life, health or safety;
  • cause a serious threat to public health or public safety; or
  • prejudice the prevention, detection, investigation, prosecution or punishment of an offence or breach of a prescribed law.
