Distance Education and flexible learning programs have been
a long established feature in education service delivery in
the NT with services being delivered through Katherine School
of the Air, Alice Springs School of the Air and Northern Territory
Open Education College.
In November 2001 DEET conducted an Interactive Distance
Learning (IDL) trial, which delivered interactive learning
using satellite between a teacher and student(s) using video
conferencing, voice, e-mail, Internet and application sharing.
A Project submission with Optus, NSW Department of Education
and NT DEET was successful in extending IDL across the whole
of the NT.
In 2005 IDL services for the NT were put out for tender,
Optus was successful in continuing to provide satellite services
and a new software product called REACT was chosen to take
IDL forward. The new 3-year service will enable IDL to meet
the needs of students, teacher, parents and DEET through greater
flexibility in software delivery and application.
New IDL software was rolled out to all remote schools and
urban schools in 2006 with greater video quality.
Schools will not be able to participate in IDL sessions until
they have been upgraded (both software and hardware updates).
If remote schools are able to assist with this process please
contact the IDL team.
