FAQs for Teachers
Q. What will be found in esp?
A. As a teacher you will be able access the profiles of all the students in your school. You can use the Class function in the system to collect your students into class groups. The Class function also allows you to publish study programs, homework and assessment schedules to the whole group.
The records and information will include:
- Enrolment history - will show all enrolments through students’ schooling
- Attendance records - will show daily attendance for current term (updated fortnightly) and past attendance for earlier terms
- Achievements - will show national test reports and Northern Territory curriculum assessment school reports
- Certificates and awards - students will be able to accumulate major certificates and awards earned during their schooling
- Student portfolios - both teachers and students will be able to post examples of student work
- Student plans - teachers can post individual educational plans, student management plans and career plans.
- Timetables - will show student timetables for middle and senior secondary students.

Q. What content will I be required to enter into esp?
A. Most of the student information will automatically be entered into esp from SAMS and other existing IT systems. However, the following mandatory items must be manually entered by teachers and school staff in order to reach minimum data standards that must be stored for each student profile.
Mandatory – All students
Student photograph |
Photographs need to be uploaded for each student and should be updated annually. Photographs will not be stored for students with a ‘no photograph’ provision. |
Student reports |
Copies of progress reports sent to parents are to be stored in student profiles in PDF format. These are the same reports that schools are required to produce under the department’s policies on reporting on student achievement.
NAPLAN and NTCF reports will be automatically loaded into esp. |
Certificates and awards |
Scanned or electronic copies of all externally accredited student awards and school annual prizes are to be stored in esp. This includes items such as life saving and first aid certificates, community awards and academic prizes. |
Mandatory – Middle and Senior Years students
Class site |
Class groups are to manually create by selecting the required student in the esp application. A function is also available to download the class sets and timetable from the SAMS timetabling module. |
Schedule |
Details of each assessment item, the scheduled data and the percentage of the total mark will be entered on the class site by the teacher. |
Assignments and homework |
Details of the assignments and other tasks set by the teacher will be published on the class site by the teacher. |
Personal learning plans |
Personal learning plans developed for SACE/NTCET compliance will be published in the esp under the student plans tab. |
Option elements – All students
Portfolio |
Schools will be able to set their own guidelines on how many and what types of student work will be stored in their portfolios. |
Student plans |
Individual learning, assessment and carer plans may be stored here. These can include attendance plans, career plans and transition plans. |

Q. When will it be available at my school?
A. The system was tested and trialled with teachers at Alawa Primary School and Nightcliff Primary School in 2008. It will be piloted with the whole school community in Term One in the following schools: Alawa Primary School, Nightcliff Primary School, Driver Primary School, Sanderson Middle School, Centralian College, Alice Springs School of the Air, Lasseter Group Schools and Sandover Group Schools. From Term Two 2009, the program will be rolled out and will be available at all Northern Territory schools by 2010.

Q. How will I access the program?
A. You can logon to the system at https://slp.ntschools.net/ from school or from home using your ntschools user name and password. This address is used by teachers and students to access the profiles using their NT Schools user account. You can also access it through the student profile tab on your school portal site.
Parents will access their child’s profile using a different address https://esp.ntschools.net because their passwords are stored in a separate system.

Q. Can I access the system from home?
A. Yes. You can access the system remotely in the same way you access your school portal from home.

Q. Does this system combine and replace past record collection systems?
A. Yes. esp draws information from a range of existing educational databases. Student enrolment summary, attendance summaries and assessment results for MAP, NAP, NAPLAN, NTCF and VET from 2007 will be available in esp.

Q. Will esp show my students’ records and information from previous school?
A. Yes. The esp system will be used throughout a student’s whole school life, so a student’s profile will follow them through Primary, Middle and Senior schooling.
esp records also show when students change schools within the Northern Territory.

Q. I am having technical problems with the system. What should I do?
A. You have been provided with technical support notes to help you the esp system. A copy of these can be found on the website https://slp.ntschools.net.

Q. Will this replace parent-teacher interviews?
A. Definitely not, esp is designed to keep parents/guardians; teachers and students in touch but will not replace direct contact with parents at parent-teacher interviews.
