MARVIN
(Messaging Architecture for the Retrieval
of Versatile Information and News)
MARVIN is an easy-to-use multimedia animation
program that utilises Microsoft agent technology. If you think
about the animated Microsoft Office Assistant then you’re
on the right track.
MARVIN has a large range of characters (or avatars) that have
been developed to look like people, animals or objects. They
can speak in artificial voices (you just type the text in
and it will appear in a balloon and be spoken in the preset
computer voices you’ve chosen) or you can use a recording
of your own voice. You can also import background images taken
locally, play music or create a conversation between two characters.
Students and teachers can use MARVIN to combine captured
audio and images to develop stories and present information
using the animated characters.
MARVIN was developed by a consortium of three parties, Inchain
Pty. Ltd., NT DEET and the Department of Community Health
Services. Consequently Health and DEET have system-wide licences
for the use of MARVIN. Built into this contract is provision
for the development of at least one new character designed
for DEET.
MARVIN was piloted in selected school and corporate environments
in early 2005. DEET are looking at full implementation into
NT schools in 2006 which includes the development of a resource
pack and professional learning support for the effective integration
of MARVIN.
