Q. Do Dell computers need any additional hardware or software for wireless connection?
A. ITSD do not recommend the use of wireless with desktops. The new desktops do not have a wireless card. Please refer to the hardware specifications section.

Q. A Dell computer or laptop has failed. What is the process to have it repaired?
A. The ICTC should log a job with the IT Service Centre.

Q. Can we order additional Dell Computers?

Q. Are staff (both schools and corporate) able to buy desktops or notebooks at the same price as schools?
A. Provision has been made in the Dell contract for staff to purchase notebook computers with the same specifications and warranty cover as the school notebooks. Dell are finalising the website that will allow direct orders and payment by DEET staff. We have also made arrangements to provide Microsoft Office software for employee notebooks under an employee licensing program.

Q. Can Staff Salary Sacrifice purchase of Dell Notebooks?
A. Staff will be able to purchase Notebooks using a salary sacrifice arrangement. Details of the salary sacrifice arrangements for NT Government employees can be found at http://uluru.nt.gov.au/dcis/hr/forms_procedures.shtml.

We currently run a Windows Software Update Server (WSUS). Is it possible to manage or receive security updates through the new server?

Q. Is Microsoft Office included with the Dell computers?
A. Yes. It will include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Publisher, Microsoft Entourage, and/or Virtual PC for Mac.

Q. How do I order MS Select Software?

Q. How do I obtain MS Office 2003 CDs?
A. Schools will need to order the media directly through HP. Click here for details.

Q. What anti virus software will be provided?
A. McAfee Anti virus which will automatically update virus definitions when logging onto the server.

Q. Can I install my own virus software on the server?
A. No.

Q. We currently run a Windows Software Update Server (WSUS). Is it possible to manage or receive security updates through the new server?
A. This will be a part of the new NTSchools Servers.

Q. Can staff backup their emails?
A. Yes. Click here for the fact sheet on Microsoft Outlook features. (Refer to the section Manual Archiving page 17 of this Guide).

Q. How do I protect my mail, files and internet access?
A. Always logoff or lock your workstation (using Ctrl-Alt-Delete) when you leave/are interrupted. In addition you can set a screen saver with a password protection. Right click Desktop > Properties > Screen Saver tab > On Resume - password protect. Click here for details.

Q. What are the default quota's for mail?
A. By default, Teachers & Admin staff have a mailbox quota of 500MB. They get a warning at 450MB and are prevented from sending any email if their mailbox size goes over 500MB. They can continue to receive email though. Students mailbox quotas have the same setup but with a 200MB quota with a warning at 150MB.

Q. What do I do if my quota is near the limit?
A. For those users who exceed their quotas there are 2 options:
1. They delete mail and Outlook makes it easy to find large message size of searching by message size
2. Create a pst file and move mail into the pst file

Q. Can I access student P: drives?
A. Yes, If you are a member of Principal, Senior Staff or ICTC role.

Q. Can the permissions for students "write access" to the M: drive be changed?
A. Yes, by default students have Read and Write access to the M: drive. If your school wants to remove the Write access then the Principal should email IT Service Centre itsupport.deet@ntschools.net requesting that "write permissions" for students be removed.

Q. What is ePass?
A. ePass is an online system that manages users and identities. It provides a single user id and password to all systems. Staff and students can request access to systems i.e. internet and the school delegate will approve the requests. It also automates transfer of user emails and LAN drives between schools.

Q. Can users access their files outside of the school?
A.SharePoint will provide access to your files outside of Schools Network.

Q. How is data restored?
A. Users can restore their data from an in-built windows feature called Previous version Client, in addition ICTCs can request restore from either DFS or Tape library through the IT Service Centre (ph. 1800 756 657).

Q. How are printers managed?
A. Schools can elect to have the IT Service Centre define all printers for all users. Users will be requested to set their default printer when they first logon. Alternatively schools can manually add printers to workstations using the procedures found here. This will add the printer for all users of that computer.

Q. How much space do we have?
A. Details for the various servers as are as follows:

Minimum available user data is 3 x 72 RAID 5 = 144 - 68 SMS volume = Approx. 76 GB.

HP Proliant DL380 G5 has 8 slot drive chassis so all Type 7 servers and below expand data RAID set.

Type 9 has external storage array.

Q. Can schools use disk storage (SAN/NAS) outside of the ntschools server?
A. Yes

Q. Is it possible to configure the SAN/NAS server to use the ntschools server's authentication system?
A. Yes.

Q. Can print quotas be set-up?
A. There is currently no print quota system on the ntschools servers.

Q. How does the quota system work with the ntschools server?
A. Quota for Files (not yet implemented) -1GB = Teachers/Admins, and 200MB = Students.

Quota for eMail (implemented) - 500MB = Teachers/Admins, and 200MB = Students

Q. Can school based Linux servers plug into the existing authentication system?
A. If there is a Linux Active Directory Services, the school or appropriately skilled person (e.g. the IT Service Centre) could implement this.

Q. What are the default time-outs for Outlook Web Access?
A. On the Outlook Web Access logon page, you can select from two security profiles. They are "Private Computer" and "Public or Shared Computer". The default time-outs are configured to log out of email after the following times:

  • Private Computer 8 Hours
  • Public or Shared Computer 15 Minutes
