ICT
Update
26th September 2007
Calling for School Portal Stories
We are receiving reports about some interesting school,
class and subject sites schools have developed using the
Sharepoint portal service. We are interested in identifying
these systems so we can develop a catalogue of potential
uses to assist other schools in using this new service.
If you have examples of Sharepoint sites developed by your
school that you would like to share with us please send
a brief description of the purpose and features of the site
and its URL to onlineservices.deet@nt.gov.au
Additional PD Support for Remote Schools
IT Services are seeking four ICT Learning Consultants to
provide enhanced professional learning and technical support
for staff in remote schools. The new staff will be based
at the Group schools in Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs
(2) and will provide pedagogical support to assist teachers
to integrate and use digital learning approaches and technical
assistance to improve the performance and reliability of
their ICT services.
NT Schools Contract Update
The details of the new contract for School IT Support services
are being finalised with CSG Services and we expect to complete
negotiations in early October with transition to occur on
28 December.
Optima Laptop Returns
Just a reminder that all Optima laptops supplied under the
laptops for teachers program must be returned
and all schools are being contacted to arrange for the pickup
and reconciliation with the school asset list. These devices
are under lease and a $530 payout will be required for each
machine that is not returned.
Junk Mail in Outlook
We have received reports of legitimate emails to some users
being automatically placed in their Junk Mail folders. Outlook
2003 has an inbuilt Junk email filter which uses a series
of rules to determine if a message is likely to be unwanted
junk mail such as the number recipients of the same message.
Unfortunately the standard settings sometime block legitimate
emails including messages from DEET to schools. We are interested
in getting feedback on the extent of the issue to see if we
need to change the standard settings however in the meantime
users can modify their local settings. Click
here for the fact sheet.
Security Warning when going to DEET Staff Site
The security warnings presented when school based users go
to the DEET Staff site are no longer required because all
access is now provided via the Schools network. We will be
reconfiguring the web site to suppress these warnings shortly.
Short Battery Life on New Dell Laptops
Some users have reported short battery life on their new Dell
laptop. Users should expect 2 - 3 hours of use under normal
circumstances with a fully charged battery and we are interested
in the extent of the problem. Premature shut downs may also
be due to the power options set of the laptop such as the
times turn off the monitor and move the system into standby
mode. Can ICT’s please advise us if your teachers have
reported inadequate battery life.
myHR – no more paper pay
slips
Paper pay slips will no longer be distributed to school staff
after 20 September 2007. Officers can view all their fortnightly
pay details and other entitlements including recreation leave,
sick leave and long service leave using myHR.
Recreation leave and sick leave applications are to be processed
electronically using myHR which will replace the form based
process.
myHR provides staff with an up to date online record of
the bulk of their employment details.
