Welcome to the final edition of Talking Technology for 2006. What a huge year it has been for all of us! We commenced the year with the commissioning of the new IDL service using REACT and things just accelerated from there with new computers, servers and software being implemented across all schools.

With the end in sight for the IT infrastructure upgrades, we are now looking to the next generation of learning systems that will be delivered on this infrastructure. In this issue we are providing more information on upgrades and highlighting the Student Portal and Learning Profiles and the Schools Without Borders projects which will both be launched next year.

In the meantime, IT services would like to wish our clients in schools and the department a very happy and safe Christmas and new year and we look forward to seeing you at the DEET staff Christmas party on 15 December.

The collection of the old LATIS computers will begin next week - Darwin ONLY
Southern Cross Moving will start dropping off pallets to load the computers on Monday 10th December and will be sending a crew around, school by school, to pack the computers onto the supplied pallets. A truck and forklift will pick up the pallets. There maybe a couple of days between when the pallets are packed and when the truck comes to collect them so they will need to be stored in a dry, safe and secure area. Please ensure the students are kept away from the loading area. Keyboards, mice and cabling are to be packed in bags or boxes separately from the computers themselves. If you have any questions please contact Shelley at IT Services on 8999 5639. Thank you for your co-operation.

Schools Upgrade
The Dell computers were delivered to all schools in the first two weeks of November and the project team has upgraded the servers in about 70% of schools to the new ntschools.net domain. The remaining schools will be migrated to the new environment before the end of the school year.

It has been a huge effort on the part of schools and our project staff and things have gone relatively smoothly thanks to the expertise and patience of all involved. The upgrades will result in our schools having computing environments better than any education sector in Australia and equal to the services provided to NT Government agencies.... more information

Student Learning Profiles and Portal Services
IT Services are working with Teaching Learning and Standards to develop a personalised online environment with the following objectives:

  • Provide students with access to personalised digital environments where they can store and retrieve their work and interact with the school email and online learning systems.
  • Provide teachers and schools with the tools to manage individual student learning profiles that record their learning needs, progress and achievements. Schools will also use the information on student profiles for reporting to parents.
  • Provide parents and guardians with controlled access to their child’s enrolment, attendance, achievement and portfolio information recorded by the system....more information

Schools Without Borders
The Online services team is working with a team of Year 8 teachers at Palmerston and Taminmin High Schools to pilot the use of online and interactive delivery of Maths, Science, SOSE and English subjects.

The primary goal of the project is to improve student retention in senior years and improve their academic outcomes as measured by MAP results and the numbers proceeding onto VET and Higher Education studies.

The secondary benefits of the project will include more flexible programs to cater for remedial and gifted students and greatly enhanced skills in using modern technologies to learn and collaborate with others.....more information
